Mature skin requires thoughtful attention in regards of makeup application. In this post, we will explore 2 highly effective mature makeup setting techniques and products that will deliver a flawless finish to your makeup with NO under eye creasing or foundation separation. Since warmer temps and humidity can really impact the staying power of your makeup, I'm sharing the products and techniques that I swear by to keep my makeup looking it's best even in the heat of Summer.
Prepping the Skin
Proper skincare is the foundation of effective makeup setting techniques for mature skin. Cleansing your skin daily is a given, and exfoliating at least twice a week will help remove dead skin cells. This will give you a flawless base for your makeup.
Techniques & Tricks
Setting Spray is your friend. I love the Milani Make It Last Setting Spray and it's my first step after applying my skincare and SPF. Then, I apply foundation (one of my favorite drugstore foundations is the Maybelline Super Stay 24 Hour Skin Tint). For a beautiful finish, I've been using this foundation brush. After foundation, I apply a color corrector and my concealer.
After all my liquid products have been applied, I reach for my setting spray once again. I spray my face, then I use a damp makeup sponge to lightly press the setting spray into the skin, focusing on the areas that tend to get oily and/or separate. This step really helps makeup stay looking great longer, and I don't find myself needing to blot as much to keep the shine away. See this tip in action on my YouTube channel here.
Now it’s time to set everything using a lightweight setting powder. Lately, I’ve been reaching for the L’Oreal Infallible Blur-Fection Longwear Loose Setting Powder which is perfect for a soft, natural finish. When you have mature skin, it’s important to apply powder with a VERY light hand to avoid emphasizing fine lines or texture. I use my Morphe Tapered Powder Brush, swirl it gently in the powder, tap off the excess, and then lightly press it onto my face for a smooth, airbrushed look.
If you have combination or dry skin, a light dusting of powder in the areas may be all you need.
But if your skin is on the oily side or you tend to get shiny in your T-zone, you might need a little extra. Once I’ve finished my makeup, I like to go back in with a touch more powder under my eyes and across my T-zone to keep everything looking fresh and shine-free throughout the day.
You can see exactly how I apply setting powder on my mature skin in this video.
Lastly, one final spritz of setting spray and your makeup will be gorgeous all day!!
