Kristen, over at We Are That Family, is hosting a themed edition of Works for Me Wednesday and is asking us to post DIY, homemade, unique or frugal gift ideas.
A few years back, my mom gave me a gift that spanned a couple generations. She collected some recipes that had significance to me and framed them along with some mementos from my late grandparents. She included a handwritten copy of my grandma’s homemade bread, a rice pudding that I made often as a teen, and a Derby Day pie recipe (I wrote about it here) that came from extended family members and included cooking notes written by both of my parents when they each baked the pie.
The recipes will continue to hold significance for the next generation as my children already request and look forward to the Derby Day Pie and my daughter has made fresh bread with her great-grandmother’s recipe.
Have you received any handmade gifts that focus on your family’s history?

What a lovely and moving gift your Mom made for you. I wish these existed in my life to pass on to my girls. You are blessed!
Christy,
I agree, I have a lot to be thankful for. Thank you for your sweet comment!

My great-grandmother always gave handwritten recipe books to all of her grandchildren when they married. My mother’s book is a family keepsake, and I can’t wait to copy down a few of those recipes (namely caramels!) when I go to visit her this month.
Jelli,
What a wonderful gift from your great-grandmother! Recipes can certainly become heirlooms for the next generations.
Thanks for your comment!

Wow. I love hand-me-down recipes. So cool.
I’m posting about frugal hand made gift-giving this year on my blog. Stop on by http://www.2008jessetree.blogspot.com
What a precious gift! My mother passed away years ago, but I have many of her handwritten recipes. Also, when I was a young bride I wrote to my grandma (who has also since passed) and asked her how she made a special dish. She wrote me back with a “pinch of this, dash of that” kind of instructions, and I had the forethought to keep it in her handwriting. So glad I did!
How cool! I love old recipes! Thanks for joining in the fun at Friday Favorites!
