Thrift/ Consignment clothingIf you are a long time reader of JustDoingMyBest, you know how much I love my local consignment shop and how I shop for “free” when I’m there. Last week, I paid about $1.30 and that was the first time  in years I had to dig into my wallet.

For those who are new to my site, let me explain this excellent way of shopping…

Each season, like clockwork, I make my appointment to bring in clothing to sell in her shop. She has an item limit, so some seasons, I make two appointments. On my dedicated day, I deliver our best outgrown and unwanted clothing which she then places on consignment. As our clothing begins to sell, I keep the money in the account where it continues to grow. It stays there until I shop in her store.

The shop owner then takes my amount due from the amount in my seller’s account. Usually, after my purchase, there is still some money remaining in my seller’s account and I hold it there until next time. I live in a small town outside of a larger city, so if you want to try this,  I would suggest frequenting the smaller shoppes and building a rapport with your local shop owner.

Shopping for “free,” makes consignment shopping even more fun! Do you have any consignment shop secrets or ideas that work for you?

I came over here from Frugal Friday….this sounds great, but if you want to take it a step further, you could probably make money on clothes instead of getting them for free. I like scouting out rummage sales to buy the bulk of my 2 girls clothes. They are much better priced than consignment or thrift stores. I almost always buy any high end namebrands I see in addition to other brands. After letting my oldest daughter and then my 18 month younger daughter wear the clothes, I sell them on ebay if possible or hold my own rummage sale. Time after time, I have made money on their clothes or, at the least, I break even by selling it at a rummage sale. I love shopping so this gives me my outlet and saves us hundreds each year!
