This dish is a cross between Thanksgiving Dressing and biscuit. This year, our family will enjoy this Christmas morning.

sausage bread 032

Ingredients:

1 pound sage pork sausage

1 small onion, chopped

1 jalapeno pepper, chopped

1/2 cup shredded Swiss (We had cheddar on hand and it worked well.)

1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese

1 egg, beaten

1/4 teaspoon hot pepper sauce

1/3 cup milk

2 cups baking mix

1/4 cup melted butter

1 teaspoon salt

2 Tablespoons chopped fresh parsley (I used dried and was happy with the results.)

Directions:

Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Grease a 9 x 13 baking pan.

In a large skillet, brown sausage, onion and jalapeno. Drain and set aside briefly.

Stir together Swiss cheese, Parmesan cheese, egg, hot sauce, and milk in a large bowl. Stir in baking mix, butter, salt and parsley. Add the sausage mixture and stir until well combined. Pour the mixture into the prepared baking pan.

Bake in preheated oven until toothpick comes out clean. Recipe calls for 35 minutes, but it only took about 25 minutes for me. Can be served warm or cold.

I served this with mandarin oranges and it was a delicious meal. I will probably make a fresh fruit salad to accompany it on Christmas morning. I have not tried making the Sausage Bread ahead of time, but as I was preparing it, it seemed like it would be conducive to early preparation. While a bit untested, my plans are to make this dish on Christmas Eve and bake it Christmas Morning. Enjoy!

Amy,

Yes, I think another ground “sausage” would work. I wonder if there is a turkey sausage? Ground turkey or beef might make this dish too dry, but it might be worth a try. I would add some sage to keep the same flavor. I love to experiment in the kitchen, so I’m sure there is another way to make this recipe work without the pork.

Thanks for reading!
