I never understood the idea behind the commercial slogan “Christmas in July.” I do know, however, that if you participate in programs such a Samaritan’s Purse or fill stockings for local children’s groups, this is a great time to start shopping.
When I see clearance sales with toys and kid-friendly items at very low prices, I pick up a few. Back To School sales are a great time to stock up on crayons, pencils, and erasers for these programs. I have also had great success at Target’s Dollar Spot clearance and other various discounters when they run clearance sales to prep for the next season.
In November, when the Samaritan’s Purse drive is in full-force, I allow my children to “shop” from the bags of clearance priced treasures in order to fill the Samaritan’s Purse shoeboxes. I supplement the boxes with other goodies that my children help pick out in the stores, but the bulk of it is purchased quite inexpensively.

Hi. Just dropping by from WFMW. Great post here. And good luck with the July Christmas.
What a great idea, now I wish that I had stocked up on those $.05 notebooks at walmart. At the time, I couldn’t justify buying more than 3. But now I wonder if they are still on sale…
Great idea! Thanks for posting a link to the charity.
We have always made off season purchases. We buy summer clothes in the winter and winter clothes in the summer. We buy holiday scrapbooking supplies AFTER the holiday is over. My poor kids never know what the season is LOL
