I love visiting warehouse stores. I could spend a couple hours shopping at Costco and consider it fun. Costco has not sponsored this post, I just love shopping there. (Though I would love to partner with them, hint, hint…wink, wink.)
Think about it, you can shop high quality clothing, jewelry and electronics under one roof. Grab a little snack from the sample cart in the freezer section, then browse home improvement and flip through a couple of books before sampling a snack in the grocery aisles. This is one of my favorite ways to spend time with my husband.
Fortunately, there are a few bargains that justify my time spent at Costco. In my opinion, there are 5 items that save us the most money when we buy them at the warehouse store.
- Cheese – Despite having one person in the family that eats dairy-free, we like to have cheese on hand and seem to go through it relatively quickly. We can get cheese in 5 pound bags that will last us weeks, for more than half the price of generic or brand name with coupons at Walmart.
- Beverages – From bottled water to rice milk, Costco is cheaper than any other store I have found so far.
- Any clearance item – When Costco clearances an item, they will not advertise it, but practically give it away. We have found fire logs regularly priced in the ballpark of $20, clearanced for $3. We have found 6-pack boxes of pasta clearanced for roughly $1 (still well in date) and a bottled white tea, regularly about $10 for $3. There is no secret to finding these clearance items, that I am aware of, other than just watching price tags. They have been mixed in with regular priced items.
- Any pickles or salsa – We love both of these in our home and for the price we would pay at Aldi or Walmart, with or without coupons, we are getting the better deal at the warehouse store.
- Nuts - I discovered one of my children loves Edamame. Who knew?! We like to keep nuts on hand for a quick, protein-filled snack. We’ve discovered we can get more than double the amount per ounce at the warehouse store than we could at a grocery or discount store. I have never seen Edamame in the nut section of other stores, but we can get a large jug of it at Costco. An abundance of an inexpensive, filling snack is always a benefit.
There are so many items that are cheaper or worth buying at the warehouse store, but I decided to stop at five. I can usually count on Costco to provide higher quality and lower prices than other stores. However, I also have identified 5 of the worst items to buy at the warehouse store. Check back this week or subscribe to my feed so you do not miss the “5 Worst Deals at the Warehouse Store.”

We like picking up string cheese at Sam’s Club. It’s only about $1 more to buy it at Sam’s for TWICE as many pieces of string cheese in the package. It’s just crazy.
Thank you for sharing these great tips. I’ll have to watch for the clearance stuff like you mentioned. I hadn’t noticed it before.
I specifically like to buy dog food there, it’s high quality and a more reasonable price than PetsMart. I also love the flowers and can seldom come home without a new book to read
Thanks again,
Kristin
