With summer break approaching, many families will soon be hitting the road for vacation. We have made numerous trips from our home in Kentucky to visit family in Texas over the years. In fact, we can count on passing a particular rest stop at lunch time, each time we travel. I have found a few tips that make snacks on these trips easier and neater.

  • If you are buying crackers, trail mix, or other similar foods, remove the contents from it’s original packaging and place in a gallon zippered bag. Because there is no extra packaging, it will allow for more compact storage.
  • Bring disposable cups, but use them for the snacks. Since the snacks are already in zippered gallon bags, just scoop a serving out with the cup. This keeps the vehicle neater because the snack is contained inside the cup, rather than having to balance napkins or paper plates. The cup will fit in the drink holders which allows the snacks to be put aside for later if necessary.
  • You can fit ALOT of plastic grocery bags into a zippered bag if you squeeze out the air. I like to have an abundance of these  bags on trips and storing them in a zippered quart bag allows this without sacrificing space.
  • Lunch idea- It just seems that when I’m on a road trip, I should have a non-boring lunch. I rarely fix plain sandwiches for trips but rather, I fix wraps. The wraps do not get soggy as sandwiches do and they are prepared ahead of time so I do not have to fight the wind or rain and hungry, impatient bellies at the rest stop. The night before we leave,  I just grab some flour tortillas and fill with our favorite sandwich fixings. These store beautifully in Glad’s Press and Seal because the seal is so tight that nothing will fall out. (No, Glad did not sponsor this message. :) I just like the product.) After they are sealed and if the wraps were customized by person, just use a permanent marker and label. There ya go, easy cheap lunch on the road.

I love these ideas. I had never thought of stashing grocery bags that way in the car. Excellent! My car is due for an overhaul in that way. Need to get organized for impromptu trips.

Fishmama,
I love how the bag storage saves space and just looks neater. Thanks for reading!

We could be travel partners! I store my grocery bags the same way–and we LOVE wraps!

I’ve always wondered about the Glad Press and Seal–nice to know that you recommend it.
