Do you love clothes? And shoes? And accessories as much as I do?
I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE adding new pieces to my wardrobe.
If you do too, maybe you are ready for a challenge.
You’ve probably seen articles about people minimizing their closets by creating a Capsule Wardrobe?
Have you ever thought about creating a Capsule Wardrobe?
When you have a Capsule Wardrobe you are basically paring down your closet (almost to bare bones) with the sole intention of doing more with less. Simplifying your life by reducing your choices.
Some people create a capsule wardrobe with the goal of simplifying their life in general.
They want to focus on other, more important things. They either are not, or don’t want to be, concerned with keeping up with the latest trends and they just want fewer choices.
While others decide to create a Capsule Wardrobe for a season. Challenging themselves to shift their focus for a short period of time. Maybe even saving a little money in the process.
That’s me. I want to see how creative I can be with fewer choices, thereby shifting my focus to other, bigger things.
I will be doing a Fall Capsule Wardrobe Challenge. With Christmas coming, it will be a good time for me to save a little money and just focus on the fun of the holiday season.
I’d really love for you to do it with me!!!
Are you up for it?
It sounds fun, but I know I need to prepare myself.
I know myself well enough to know that I will not be able to “flip a switch” and suddenly have fewer clothes and fewer options and somehow, magically be ok with it.
I will also need to turn off the “deal detector” or the “sale spotter” in my brain!!!
Here is how I plan to prepare myself, and my closet, for the Fall Capsule Wardrobe Challenge:
Mentally Prepare – Going from shopping with no limits (except for money) to practically no shopping at all is going to a mind shift. It’s not something I can do overnight.
When I worked what my mother called a “real job”, I had a sign on my desk that read “I work to support my shopping habit”.
I’m not shopping every day of course, but I do like a good deal and I love seeing what’s new, even if I don’t buy anything. I love scouring the websites and folding down pages in catalogs. I don’t buy half the things I actually want, it’s just fun to look and daydream.
I will need to stay away from some of my favorite websites, apps, and stores.
This will never work If I don’t remove the temptation!!
Versatility – The items I choose for my capsule wardrobe have to be versatile. Each item must be able to be worn alone and layered with several other pieces as well. Can it be worn to dinner with friends? Can I wear it to church? Can I wear a sweater over it when it’s cold? Can it be worn dressed up or dressed down?
I won’t be choosing the bright pink top with green polka dots! Practicality will be a priority.
But, of course, “practical” doesn’t have to mean boring!
Pare Down Now – Now is the time to eliminate things I don’t wear often. I’m donating items and seeing what fits and what doesn’t. Well before the challenge even starts, I want my closet to be a scaled down version of what it is now. If I’m seeing fewer things early, it won’t be such a shock when I start the challenge.
Limit Shopping Now – While I am limiting any purchases to versatile items that will take me thru the entire 90-day challenge. I’m also avoiding the end of the season sales. What I don’t want to do is attempt to get my shopping fix before the challenge starts. That can only spell disaster. No matter how good the sale, or how deep the discount, if I try to do too much before the challenge starts, I will be very disappointed when the packages stop all the sudden. Going cold turkey is never fun!!
I’m limiting myself now. When I do get something it needs to be a piece that I can wear 3 months from now.
Forecast – Forecasting and thinking about your daily habits should be the most important consideration when choosing your wardrobe for 90 days. What is your normal daily life like? Do you spend more time in dressier clothes? Do you spend more time in casual clothes? Do you have a wedding or a dressy event coming up?
My Capsule Wardrobe Checklist will be a guide, not a bible. Your life and clothing requirements will look different than mine. I will stick to a certain number of pieces. But my pieces will be different than yours. If I make my wardrobe look like yours (and vice versa) I will either be broke or frustrated. Or both!!
Know your individual needs before you start choosing your pieces. Every piece in your wardrobe has to work for YOU and YOUR your lifestyle.
What’s Your Why? – When this challenge is over I want to learn something about myself. About my shopping habits. What does fashion and buying new things do for me? What’s my “why”? I don’t want to just watch the clock turn to midnight after 90 days and hop on line and attempt to make up for 3 months of no shopping.
I’m excited about this challenge and I can’t wait for you to join me. Stay tuned to Just Doing My Best for the Fall Capsule Wardrobe Challenge.
