Whether you’re a shoe girl, a makeup maven, jewelry junkie, or you love getting your nails done, there is definitely something to be said about the cost of being a woman.
When my husband and I were first married, he gave me a “no occasion” card and put $50 in it. When I asked what it was for, he said: “I just thought you might enjoy doing a little shopping for yourself”. That was sweet of him. I put the money to good use.
A few weeks later we were in a clothing store and he saw a display of ladies tops. When he looked at the price tag he said: “is this really how much this costs”? I said “yes, but these over here are on sale (pointing to a different rack)”. He told me he had no idea how expensive it was to be a woman. He went on to say that the day he gave me $50, he thought was doing a nice thing. He was now realizing that $50 doesn’t really get very far.
Ever since then, he often mentions to me that the cost of being a woman is much greater than the cost of being a man.
He doesn’t even know the half of it!!!
Whether you’re a girly girl or not, it’s expensive. Even if you don’t wear a lot of makeup or jewelry, it can be very costly at even the most basic level.
Generally speaking, I’m pretty girlie. I like new things. I like makeup. I don’t like to spend a lot of money. But, it’s unavoidable sometimes.
Take a trip to the lingerie department for instance. In no time at, you’ll probably see a “sale” on ladies underwear. “5 for $25”. We are so conditioned to think, “I probably need some, I’ll get them while they are on sale”!
Your husband, on the other hand, gets to pick up a 5 pack “on sale” for under $10!!! Now that’s a sale!!
Don’t even get me started on bras!!! Those aren’t exactly “optional” clothing items. So, we end up paying whatever we need to in order to get a good one. Even then, they usually only last about a year!!
How many pairs of shoes does your husband own? Four? Five? Black, brown, athletic, work shoes, done!!!
I’d love to only need 4 or 5 pairs of shoes. That’s never going to happen. I don’t think I could whittle it down to 4 -5 per season.
We want to look nice and they want us to look nice. But, looking nice costs money.
Men can buy jeans at a reasonable price. So can we for the most part. But, the guys can get away with having 3 or 4 pairs of the same type of jeans and call it a day. Not us!!
We have a lot more bases to cover. Boot Cut, Skinny Jeans, Distressed, Dark Denim, White Denim, oh my!!! And let’s not even talk about the different sizes we need depending on what’s “happening” to us that week!!!
Do you live where it get’s cold in the winter? Then you’ll need to add a few jackets, hats, scarves, gloves, and snow gear to the wardrobe!!
Purses can get pretty crazy too. I don’t think I could go without one, even if I wanted to.
Besides, if I don’t bring my purse where will my daughter and my husband put their stuff?
I’m a makeup junkie. I love seeing what’s new and what I can try next. I try not to go overboard, but I do occasionally get drawn in by the beautifully crafted display of new products. They know how to get to me!!
After a recent trip to Ulta, my husband saw the receipt and the items I purchased, and said: “This cost $100?” He wasn’t mad, he was just surprised. And, that $100 dollar receipt was after a discount and a couple of coupons. The cost of being a woman can add up fast!!
We can’t forget about hair. If I didn’t cut, color, and style my graying, frizzy, stick straight hair I would probably scare small children when I walked out of the house. So, it’s probably safe to say my hair dresser’s kids college fund is not in jeopardy of going away anytime soon. After all, I need to keep this mane manageable!!
The cost of being a woman can be crazy. But, let’s face it. Most of us love getting a new outfit. It’s wonderful what a new pair of shoes can do for a mood. And, a great piece of jewelry can put just the right sparkle in our eye when it’s a gift from someone we love.
